Concern Universal wins National Charity Award!

Concern Universal wins National Charity Award!

Concern Universal has been awarded the 2008 Charity of the Year, International Aid and Development Category.

Ian Williams, says, "This award is a huge accolade! It is testimony to the enormous dedication and great effectiveness of team members and partners across Concern Universal that work with over 1.5 million people living in some of the world's poorest communities. It is also due to the many people and organisations who have decided to support us in such a committed way: we could not do anything without this support!

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone involved: those carrying out the work in oftentimes extremely challenging circumstances; those who support us in such a remarkable way that has enabled us to increase the scale, scope, influence and impact of our activities. Whilst this is a wonderful milestone for Concern Universal, the organisation is not what matters: rather it is the people that we exist to serve and the cause that inspires us all. Photo shows Maeve Sherlock, chair of the Charity Awards judging panel and Shaheen Khan presenting the award to Ian Williams and Adama Bah.

We had to demonstrate how we have excellent standards in all that we do. This was through providing evidence across all eight elements of the UK Charity Commission's ‘Hallmarks for Excellence'. It is a great confidence boost that we won the award due to outstanding achievements in this respect; also because of an innovative cross sector enterprise - Gambia is Good - that we presented.

Gambia is Good is a horticultural marketing initiative. It enables over 1000 farmers in the Gambia to supply high value markets; it provides them and their families with an opportunity to earn a decent income. The partnership with Haygrove, a leading international horticultural business, is demonstrating a model of business and development sector collaboration that will hopefully inspire others."

Daniel Phelan, organiser of the Charity Awards 2008 commented, "What [all the winners] have in common is their ability to turn innovation, passion and vision into an effective project or organisation demonstrating considerable impact. Concern Universal is a fantastic organisation, the award is thoroughly deserved..."
