HABLANDO DE JOHN HUME

JOHN HUME[1]

I will write about a famous man, but not famous in terms of gossip nor commercial media. Instead he is famous for his part in social processes for humanity, for seeking a more humane, peaceful and democratic world. I will write about John Hume, whom my wife and I met in July 2005 in a ceremony to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Concern Universal, the organization with which we work in Colombia. There we witnessed his generosity, transparency and humility, a great man also always accompanied by his wife.

He was born in Derry, Ireland in 1937. He is an Irish politician. He has a degree in Law and began his public career as the founder of the trade union fund in his native Derry. In 1968 he founded the Committee of Civil Action of Derry and in 1969 he led the manifestations of protest against the arrival of the British military contingent in Ulster. In 1970 he helped to found the Social Democratic and labour party (SDLP), of which he was the vice president until 1979 and the president from that year on. His work as a member of parliament has all been carried out in Ulster from 1969 to 1972 and 1982 to 1986, in the European Parliament since 1979 and in the Chamber of Commons since 1983.

In 1971 he went on hunger strike protesting against the imprisonment of hundreds of Irish people suspected of taking part in the armed struggle against the British Government. In 1997 he played an essential part in the Peace negotiations in Ireland. Despite the many difficulties and breakdowns in the negotiations, he continued talking to the political party Sinn Féin, thereby facilitating , thanks to the “Hume-Adams process", with Gerry Adams, leader of Sinn Féin, an eventual cease fire by the armed group IRA in 1994, which permitted the definitive Good Friday agreement of 1998 to be celebrated.

He was given the Nobel Peace Prize, jointly with the trade union leader David Trimble, for his great efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in the north of Ireland. He is one of the most important figures in the modern political history of the north of Ireland and one of the great architects of this peace process. He is the only person to receive the three greatest peace prizes in the world: the Nobel Peace prize (1998), the Gandhi Peace Prize and the Martin Luther King Peace prize.

In 2004, John Hume announced his total retirement from politics, leaving Mark Durkan as the leader and his successor in the SDLP. However Hume and his wife continue active in promoting European integration and in giving public talks against global poverty.
